Using a rainbow flag as a symbol of gay pride began in San Francisco, California, but eventually became common at LGBT rights events worldwide. The original rainbow flag, called the Freedom Flag, was devised by Gilbert Baker in 1978. Some pride flags are not exclusively related to LGBT matters, such as the polyamory flag. The rainbow flag’s derivations are used to focus attention on specific similar-interest groups within the community. The rainbow flag is the most widely used LGBT flag and LGBT symbol in general. A pride flag is any flag that represents a segment or part of the LGBT community.
